We would suggest the children complete the activities in the following order but it us up to you! Please remind your child to make sure they write the correct unit of measurement after their answers this week, i.e. grams, kilograms or tonnes. If you're feeling really adventurous, you could even do some baking or cooking to help them practise their measuring skills!



We would like the children to record the mass of a variety of different food items around the kitchen, e.g. tins, packets, etc, on the 'Weight Around the Home' sheet. Ideally, the items should be unopened as it would be helpful for the children to lift the item as well before recording the measurement to help improve their estimating skills. The mass should be written on the packaging somewhere. For example, my box of Rice Krispies measures 700g. They are looking for items that are measured in grams or kilograms but if they are litres or millilitres they can easily be converted (e.g. 100ml = 100g). Even better, if you have your own weighing scales your child could measure the mass of different objects. This will help your child practise reading scales. Whichever way you do it, you could send us a photo of your child completing this activity for the Facebook page if you wanted to!


We would like the children to revising reading scales on the 'Just weight' sheet. Remind them that the intervals on scales usually go up in factors of 1000 (e.g. 5g, 10g, 20g, 25g, 50g, 100g, 200g, etc). They should check the starting interval (usually 0) and the finishing one so they know the minimum and maximum measurements as the children sometimes assume they only go up to 1kg. 


Please note:

  • they should use a ruler to draw the arrows on Question 2
  • on Question 3, the arrow lies between two marks or intervals - the answer should be the one the arrow is closer to
  • they need to write g for grams after their answers



We would like the children to practise converting units of mass by completing the 'Converting Grams and Kilograms' and 'Converting Units of Mass' activities. They must write the correct unit of measurement after their answers for the second one (the table headings already do this on the first one), i.e. g, kg, t.


Thursday and Friday

The children should try to complete as many of the other activities as they can. Please note:


  • the children need a calculator for Questions 3, 5 and 6 on page 72 - they don't need to do Question 4 unless you have bathroom scales and would like to
  • they will also need a calculator for Questions 3-6 on page 73
  • they don't need to do Question 2 on page 74
